Seasons inspire designs, or dictate them sometimes. Here’s my baby blouse for warm weather – light, breezy and cheerful. Really easy to make, too. This was made in a single day.
I had trouble finding the right fabric, until I found this one – white cotton with tiny black dots. The orange edging came from my stash. And the pockets were a last minute inspiration.
Cutting out the blouse didn’t require much designing. I just took measurements from a t-shirt that I thought fit the baby comfortably. But remember that cotton doesn’t have the same give that knit materials do, so being a little generous helps.
I cut out a very basic design – armholes, a simple neck and two pieces for the front with a little extra to finish the edges. Sleeveless blouses are perfect for warm days. Besides, they are easier and quicker to make, but only if you are good with making the piping.
The steps followed in sewing it up:
Attach pieces at the shoulders
Join the sides
Finish the armholes
Fold and sew the edges of the two front pieces
Finish the lower edge
Make piping for the neck
Sew on clasps or Velcro or buttons
As for the pockets, just cut out two square (or rectangle) pieces of the contrasting fabric, fold and sew the top edge, fold the other edges inwards and pin in place. Just over sew on three sides. There, wasn’t that easy? Do let me know if you want more details about how to make this baby blouse.
